Thekkady is the doorway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, where a colonial-era reservoir snakes through the forest and herds of elephants come down to drink. The neighbouring town of Kumily is steeped — literally — in spice: cardamom, pepper and clove grow on every slope. Glide across Periyar lake at dawn, raft along its edge, or walk the plantations with the scent of cardamom in the air.

Why go

  • Boat across Periyar lake to watch elephants, gaur and sambar at the water's edge.

  • Bamboo-raft and trek the reserve's border with trained tribal guides.

  • Tour a working cardamom and pepper plantation in Kumily.

  • Catch a Kalaripayattu martial-arts or Kathakali performance in the evening.

Best season

September to March

Pleasant and dry, with animals gathering near the receding lake — best wildlife odds October–February. Summer (April–May) is hotter but sightings stay good; the monsoon is lush but wetter.

Getting there

By air
Madurai (Tamil Nadu) is ~140 km and Cochin ~190 km; both are common arrival points by cab.
By rail
Kottayam (~110 km) is the nearest convenient railhead; continue by road through the spice hills.
By road
Kumily, on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, is the base town — walkable to the reserve gate at Thekkady.

Highlights

Periyar Lake boat safari

The signature 1.5-hr cruise; the first morning boat gives the best chance of animals at the shore.

Border hiking & bamboo rafting

Eco-tourism programmes led by reformed-poacher guides go deeper than the boat — book at the reserve office.

Spice plantation tour

Walk among cardamom, pepper, vanilla and clove in Kumily and buy spices at source.

Kathakali & Kalaripayattu

Nightly shows in Kumily showcase Kerala's classical dance-drama and ancient martial art.

Local tips

  • Book the lake boat early in the day and reserve online — slots are capped and popular.

  • Wear neutral, quiet clothing on safaris and keep noise down for better sightings.

  • Leeches appear after rain; carry salt or repellent for forest walks.

  • Buy spices from the plantation or government outlets to be sure of quality.
