Munnar
An ocean of tea beneath South India's highest peak
Weather in Munnar
Live 7-day forecast · Open-Meteo
Munnar is what happens when colonial tea planters meet a landscape of impossibly green hills. Estates ripple over every contour at 1,600 m, the air is thin and cool, and Eravikulam National Park shelters the endangered Nilgiri tahr below Anamudi, the highest peak in South India. Once every twelve years the slopes turn violet as the Neelakurinji flowers — the next mass bloom is due in 2030.
Why go
Walk among manicured tea gardens that glow at golden hour.
Meet the Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam National Park, under Anamudi (2,695 m).
Sip a cup at the Tata Tea / Kannan Devan museum and learn how the leaf is made.
Catch sunrise over the valley from Top Station on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border.
Best season
September to May
Clear, crisp and green after the rains. December–February nights are genuinely cold. The southwest monsoon (June–August) brings heavy fog and landslip-prone roads.
Getting there
- By air
- Cochin International Airport is ~110 km / 3.5 hrs away via Neriamangalam — the most scenic and common approach.
- By rail
- Aluva and Ernakulam are the nearest railheads; continue by cab or KSRTC bus up to Munnar town.
- By road
- Well connected from Kochi, Madurai and Thekkady. The last stretch is a winding ghat — allow extra time.

Local tips
Book Eravikulam tickets in advance — entry is limited and sells out in peak season.
Layer up; mornings and evenings drop sharply even outside winter.
The best tea-garden light is the first hour after sunrise, before tour buses arrive.
Kolukkumalai (world's highest tea estate) needs a 4x4 over a rough jeep track.
