Complete Munnar Road Trip Guide from Kochi
The route, the stops, the viewpoints and where to stay â everything for the classic Kerala hill drive.
The drive from Kochi to Munnar is one of India's great road trips: 130-odd kilometres that climb from coconut-fringed coast to tea country at 1,600 m, switchbacking past waterfalls the whole way. Done right it is a day's adventure, not just a transfer. Here is how to do it right.
The route
The standard route is Kochi â Kothamangalam â Neriamangalam â Adimali â Munnar, roughly 4â4.5 hours of driving without stops. The road is good tar almost the whole way; the climbing starts in earnest after Neriamangalam.
Leave Kochi by 7 am. You want to be climbing before the day-tripper traffic and clear of the ghat road before the afternoon mist rolls in.
Stops worth making
- Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls (near Adimali): Twin roadside falls, busiest and best in the monsoon. There is parking and tea stalls.
- Karadippara viewpoint: The first big reveal of the valley as you climb â pull over for the panorama.
- Spice plantations around Adimali: Quick guided walks through cardamom, pepper and nutmeg. Touristy but genuinely informative.
- Power House Waterfall: A short stop before Munnar town.
In and around Munnar
Once you arrive, the real sights are a little outside town:
- Kolukkumalai Tea Estate â the highest tea estate in the world, reached by a bone-rattling jeep track. Go for sunrise; it is unforgettable.
- Eravikulam National Park â home of the Nilgiri tahr and the Anamudi peak. Book tickets early; entry is by forest bus.
- Top Station â the KeralaâTamil Nadu border viewpoint, often above the clouds.
- Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point â easy, family-friendly, busy on weekends.
Best season
September to March is prime: clear mornings, comfortable days, cold nights. The monsoon (JuneâAugust) is lush and dramatic but the ghat road can be foggy and landslip-prone â drive it only in daylight. AprilâMay is warm and hazy but fine for the estates.
Where to stay
Munnar's accommodation splits three ways:
- Tea-estate homestays on the Kolukkumalai and Chinnakanal roads â the best value and the best mornings.
- Resorts around Chinnakanal and Pothamedu â for pools and valley-view balconies.
- In-town hotels â convenient but you trade the views for the bus stand.
For a first trip, stay outside town. Waking up inside the tea gardens with mist in the valley is the whole point of Munnar.
Driving tips
- Fuel up in Adimali; stations thin out as you climb.
- Use engine braking on the descent â riding the brakes down the ghats overheats them.
- Carry cash for small estates and viewpoints.
- Watch for the Nilgiri tahr and stray cattle on the road near Eravikulam.
Take two nights if you can. One to recover from the drive, one to actually see Munnar at dawn.
