Silent Valley is the wildest place in this list — a core of undisturbed tropical evergreen rainforest in the Palakkad hills, named for the strange hush of a forest with few cicadas. Saved from a hydroelectric dam by a landmark 1980s conservation movement, it shelters the endangered lion-tailed macaque and a wealth of endemic life along the Kunthi river. Access is deliberately limited, by permit and guide only — and that is the point.

Why go

  • Step into one of the planet's last contiguous stretches of virgin rainforest.

  • Look for the lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur and great hornbill.

  • Climb the watchtower at Sairandhri for a sea-of-canopy view over the Kunthi valley.

  • Experience genuine wilderness with no resorts, roads or crowds inside the core.

Best season

December to April

The dry months are the only practical window — trails are passable and leeches fewer. The park effectively closes through the heavy June–September monsoon.

Getting there

By air
Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) is the nearest airport at ~80 km; Kozhikode is ~140 km.
By rail
Palakkad Junction (~65 km) is the closest major railhead; continue by road to Mukkali.
By road
All visits start at Mukkali, the forest office and gateway, ~40 km from Mannarkkad; jeep + guide go in from there.
