Ponmudi
The 'golden peak' of hairpins and tea above Trivandrum
Weather in Ponmudi
Live 7-day forecast · Open-Meteo
Ponmudi, the 'golden peak', is Trivandrum's nearest hill station: a 1,100 m ridge reached by a road of twenty-two tight hairpin bends through forest that gets greener with every turn. Up top are tea patches, breezy meadows and trailheads into the Agasthyamalai biosphere — including the route to Agasthyarkoodam, one of the few peaks pilgrims still climb on foot. It rewards the unhurried.
Why go
Climb the 22 hairpin bends through deep forest to the cool ridge-top.
Roam open grassland meadows with valley views in every direction.
Chase the seasonal Meenmutty waterfall on a short forest walk.
Use it as a base for the Agasthyarkoodam pilgrimage trek (seasonal permits).
Best season
August to May
Post-monsoon greenery from August, cool and clear through winter. Avoid the heaviest June–July rain when the bends get slick and views vanish into cloud.
Getting there
- By air
- Trivandrum International Airport is ~60 km / 2 hrs away — the closest of all Kerala hill stations to a major airport.
- By rail
- Thiruvananthapuram Central is the nearest railhead; continue by cab or bus toward Vithura and up the ghat.
- By road
- Via Vithura and Kallar; the climb of 22 hairpins begins past the Kallar river.
