Alappuzha — Alleppey to most — is the gateway to Kerala's backwaters: a maze of canals, lagoons and the vast Vembanad lake stitched together by emerald paddy fields that sit below sea level. The signature experience is a night aboard a kettuvallam, a thatched rice barge reborn as a houseboat, watching village life slide past from the deck. In August the Nehru Trophy snake-boat race turns the water into a roaring spectacle.

Why go

  • Overnight on a houseboat through the Kuttanad backwaters and lake.

  • Glide the narrow village canals by canoe or shikara at dawn.

  • Witness the thunder of the Nehru Trophy snake-boat race (second Saturday of August).

  • Unwind on the long, lighthouse-marked Alappuzha beach.

Best season

November to February

Cool, dry and calm — the prime houseboat window. The boat-race season peaks in the August monsoon, which is humid and wet but atmospheric.

Getting there

By air
Cochin International Airport is ~75 km / 2 hrs north; Trivandrum is ~155 km south.
By rail
Alappuzha railway station is well connected along the coastal line and is minutes from the boat jetties.
By road
On NH-66 between Kochi and Kollam; the famous Alleppey–Kollam ferry also links the two by water.

Highlights

Book a kettuvallam with a crew and cook; one-night cruises drift through Kuttanad's lake and canals.

Village canoe tour

Smaller paddle-canoes reach the narrow channels houseboats can't — the most intimate way to see daily life.

Kuttanad paddy country

Cycle or boat past fields farmed below sea level, a UN-recognised agricultural heritage system.

Marari & Alappuzha beaches

Quiet sand and a 19th-century lighthouse a short ride from the canals.

Local tips

  • Board houseboats by midday — most must moor by sunset under backwater rules.

  • Choose a smaller boat and ask about solar/quiet engines to tread lighter on the lake.

  • Carry mosquito repellent for evenings on the water.

  • For the boat race, book seats and stay well ahead — the town fills completely.
